The blade starts as alternating layers of 15N20 and 5160. Our smiths forge-weld those layers, then twist the billet before drawing it out. That twist is what creates the swirling firestorm figure you see across the flat of the blade.

The pattern isn't printed or etched on. It runs through the steel itself, which is why it stays visible even after years of sharpening. Each billet reacts a little differently to the hammer and the acid etch, so your knife will not match the photo exactly.

Handle work happens after the blade is heat treated. We shape and pin the Micarta scales by hand, then sand the transitions smooth so nothing catches your palm. The red fiber liner sits between scale and tang as a thin accent line.

Blade Performance

The 15N20 and 5160 combination is chosen for toughness rather than looks alone. 5160 is a chrome-silicon spring steel long used in leaf springs and swords, and it resists chipping under impact. 15N20 carries nickel, which keeps it bright through the etch and adds fine grain to the edge.

Together they take a razor-sharp edge and hold it through a working day of cutting rope, carving wood, and preparing food. Both are carbon steels, not stainless, so the edge sharpens back easily on a stone. That same carbon content means the blade needs oil and dry storage.

The drop-style profile puts the point in line with your cutting force. That gives you control for skinning and detail work without losing belly for longer slicing strokes.

Handle & Grip

Micarta is layered fabric set in resin. It doesn't swell in humidity, doesn't crack in cold, and gets slightly tackier when your hands are wet; the opposite of polished wood. That matters when you're dressing game or working in rain.

The 4.5-inch handle fills an average adult hand with room to choke up behind the blade. The 5 mm scales give it enough width to hold without fatigue during long cutting sessions, and the contoured shape keeps your grip from sliding forward.

Every knife ships with a fitted buffalo leather sheath. Buffalo hide runs thicker and denser than standard cowhide, so it resists scuffs and punctures on the trail.

The sheath covers the full edge and rides on your belt for easy access. For long-term storage, keep the knife out of the leather; tanned hide holds moisture against carbon steel.

Knife Care

Wipe the blade clean after every use, especially after contact with meat, fruit, or salt water. Dry it fully before it goes away.

Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or a dedicated blade oil to the steel. Store the knife in a dry place outside the sheath. Touch up the edge on a whetstone as it dulls, and avoid powered grinders that overheat the temper. A darkened patina is normal on carbon steel and helps protect it.
