Handmade Damascus Skinning Knife: 8" Bonfire Pattern with Red Laminated Wood Handle
This handmade Damascus skinning knife pairs a broad 4-inch blade with a 4-inch handle, an even split that puts weight where your hand can steer it. The steel is forged from 15N20 and 1080 in a bonfire pattern, and the blade's deep belly is cut for long, sweeping strokes along a hide.
Red laminated wood scales with a black fiber liner and thick brass pins finish it. The color is bold and intentional; a bright handle is easier to find when you set the knife down on leaf litter or in the bed of a truck. It suits hunters processing game, along with anyone who wants a compact fixed blade with real presence.

Handmade Craftsmanship
We stack 15N20 and 1080 into a billet, bring it to welding heat, and forge the layers together. Working the hot steel raises the bonfire figure, which flows across the blade rather than running in straight lines. The acid etch afterward darkens the 1080 while the nickel in the 15N20 stays bright, and that contrast is what you see.
The wide blade shape is ground after heat treatment, when the steel is hard and unforgiving. Getting a broad belly right takes patience, since there's more surface to keep even across the curve.
Handle work follows. Laminated wood is built from thin veneers bonded under pressure, and it machines cleanly without the movement solid wood can have. We shape each scale to the tang, set thick brass pins through it, and sand everything flush, so the transition under your palm feels like one piece.
Blade Performance
1080 sits at roughly 0.80% carbon. It's an old, well-understood blade steel that hardens predictably and takes impact without chipping. 15N20 adds nickel, refines the grain, and brings the edge to a finer point.
That combination matters more in skinning than most people expect. Skinning is a hundred small cuts, not five big ones, and a dull edge tears hide instead of parting it. This steel takes a genuinely keen edge and comes back on a stone in a few minutes, so you can touch it up partway through an animal.
The broad blade profile spreads the cutting load across a long curve. That belly does most of the work while the point stays out of the way, which is exactly what keeps you from nicking the meat underneath. It also gives you a wider flat for trimming and scraping.
Handle & Grip
Laminated wood is made from thin layers of hardwood veneer bonded with resin under pressure. That construction gives it two advantages over solid wood: it resists swelling and cracking with humidity changes, and it holds its shape through seasons of temperature swings.
The 5 mm scales fill your palm without feeling bulky. At 4 inches, the handle matches the blade one to one, so the balance point sits right at your grip. The knife doesn't tip forward or drag back; it just turns where you point it.
The black fiber liner runs as a thin dark line between the red scales and the tang. Small detail, but it's what keeps the transition from looking abrupt.
Ideal Uses
- Skinning deer, hogs, and mid-size game
- Trimming, scraping, and hide preparation
- Butchery work at camp or in the shop
- Camp food prep where a wide blade helps
- Everyday carry as a compact fixed blade
- Gifting to hunters, and display for collectors
Sheath & Carry
The knife ships with a fitted cowhide leather sheath. Cowhide forms snugly around a short blade and stays supple through seasons of belt carry.
The sheath covers the edge fully and rides on your belt without pulling. Because the knife is compact, you'll forget it's there until you need it. Take the blade out of the leather for long-term storage; tanned hide holds humidity, and humidity against carbon steel means spotting.

Knife Care
Blood and fat are acidic on carbon steel, so wipe the blade during the work and wash it properly when you finish. Dry it completely before it goes anywhere.
Apply a light coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage, and keep the knife in a dry place outside its sheath. Laminated wood needs less maintenance than solid wood, but an occasional wipe with oil keeps the finish looking right. Sharpen on a whetstone as the edge dulls, and avoid powered grinders; the heat they generate can soften the temper permanently.
Why Choose Centuries Crafts?
Every blade is forged, ground, and finished by hand in our workshop. We choose the steel and handle stock before the work starts, and each knife gets inspected before it ships. A skinning knife lives or dies on the edge and the grip, so that's where the effort goes.
