The billet begins as stacked sheets of 15N20 and 1080. Our smiths bring it to welding heat, hammer the layers together, then manipulate the stack to draw out the bonfire figure. Each pass changes how the layers stretch, and no two billets behave identically.

An acid etch at the end darkens the 1080 and leaves the nickel-rich 15N20 bright. That contrast is what makes the pattern visible. It sits inside the steel, not on top of it, so sharpening won't erase it.

The 6 mm blade stock is thicker than we use on skinning knives. That was a deliberate choice for this profile. The thicker blade profile provides additional strength for demanding outdoor utility tasks.

Handle assembly comes after heat treatment. We fit the Jute Micarta scales to the tang, pin them, then hand-sand the edges so nothing bites into your fingers over a long day.

Blade Performance

1080 is a simple high-carbon steel with roughly 0.80% carbon. Bladesmiths have used it for generations because it hardens predictably and stays tough. It offers toughness and durability when working with demanding natural materials.

15N20 adds nickel and a finer grain structure. Paired with 1080, you get a blade that takes a keen edge and comes back sharp on a stone without much effort. Both steels are carbon steels, so the trade for that easy sharpening is regular oiling.

At 6 mm thick, this blade favors strength over fine slicing. The thicker blade profile is suited to demanding outdoor cutting and general utility tasks where additional strength is useful. Expect solid edge retention through a working day, and expect to touch it up rather than send it out for service.

Handle & Grip

Jute Micarta is burlap fabric saturated with resin and cured under pressure. The woven jute leaves a slightly textured surface that provides a secure grip in humid or wet outdoor conditions.

It also won't absorb water, swell, or crack the way natural wood can in tropical conditions. That's the main reason we chose it here over horn or hardwood.

The full 5-inch length means the handle matches the blade one to one. You get room for a full fist plus a choked-up grip for control work, and the balance sits close to your hand rather than out at the tip.

Sheath & Carry

A fitted buffalo leather sheath is included. Buffalo hide is thicker and denser than common cowhide, so it handles brush contact and scuffing better on the trail.

The fitted leather sheath covers the blade and helps protect it during storage and transport. Don't store the knife inside it long-term. Tanned leather holds humidity, and humidity plus carbon steel means rust.

Knife Care

Clean the blade after each use and dry it completely. Humid and coastal conditions can expose carbon steel to moisture and salt, so regular cleaning and drying are important.

Wipe on a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before the knife goes into storage. Keep it in a dry spot, out of the sheath. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge stops biting, and skip powered grinders; they build heat that can soften the temper. A gray patina will develop over time. Leave it; it slows further rust.
