The blade begins as alternating sheets of 15N20 and 5160. Our smiths weld them under the hammer, then twist the hot billet before drawing it into a bar. Twisting is what pulls the layers into the swirling firestorm figure instead of a flat ladder.

Because that twist happens by hand and by feel, the density of the pattern shifts from one knife to the next. Some run tight and busy, others open and flowing. Yours will be its own.

Grinding comes next, then heat treatment, then the acid etch that darkens the 5160 and leaves the 15N20 bright; only after all that do we fit the handle. We shape the Micarta scales to the tang, pin them, and sand the transitions until nothing catches your hand during a long session.

Blade Performance

5160 is a spring steel with chromium and silicon, used for decades in leaf springs and sword blades because it bends before it breaks. In a hunting knife, that toughness means the edge survives contact with bone instead of chipping out.

15N20 brings nickel and a tighter grain. It takes a fine, keen edge and refines what 5160 alone would give you. The two together produce a blade that stays sharp through an entire animal and returns to sharp on a stone in minutes.

A 6-inch blade gives you reach and a longer cutting stroke. You can open a body cavity in fewer passes and skin larger sections without repositioning constantly. The trade is control at the tip; this is a better blade for a whitetail or elk than for caping a small animal.

At 5 mm thick, there's enough spine to lean on the knife when you need to, without the blade turning into a wedge that binds in a cut.

Handle & Grip

Green and black Micarta is resin-bound fabric. It doesn't absorb blood, doesn't swell in wet weather, and gets slightly grippier when your hands are slick, which describes most of field dressing.

The 5-inch handle gives you a full grip with room left over. You can slide back for chopping leverage or choke up near the ricasso for careful work around the hide. The red fiber liner runs as a thin bright line between scale and tang.

Balance sits near the front of the handle. The knife feels like it wants to move forward through a cut rather than sitting dead in your palm.

Sheath & Carry

Every knife ships with a fitted buffalo leather sheath. Buffalo hide is thicker than standard cowhide, so it holds up to belt wear, brush, and the general abuse a hunting sheath takes across seasons.

It covers the edge fully and rides on your belt where you can reach it one-handed. After the hunt, take the knife out of the leather before it goes into the safe. Tanned hide traps moisture, and moisture on carbon steel becomes rust.

Knife Care

Field dressing puts blood and stomach acid on the blade, and both are hard on carbon steel. Wipe it down as soon as the work is finished, then wash and dry it properly when you get back.

Oil the blade with mineral oil or a blade oil before storage. Keep the knife dry and out of its sheath between hunts. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge starts sliding instead of biting. Avoid bench grinders, which build enough heat to soften the temper. A darkening patina is normal and helps protect the steel.
