The blade is shaped, ground, and finished by hand. A 7-inch Bowie is a good size to grind well, long enough to show a clean bevel line and short enough to keep that line true throughout.

Stag horn is the more demanding part of the build. Every piece carries its own density, surface texture, and colour, and heat causes horn to warp, which rules out grinding it quickly on a belt. We shape it in stages, letting the material cool between passes, then fit and finish it by hand.

That means every stag-handled knife comes out slightly different. Some run pale and smooth, others deep amber with pronounced ridging. It is the nature of working with a natural material rather than moulding a synthetic one.

Fit and finish get checked before anything ships, particularly at the joint between horn and steel where a gap would collect moisture.

Blade Performance

Carbon steel takes a keen edge and returns to sharp on a stone in minutes. For a hunting knife, that responsiveness matters more than extreme edge retention, because sharpening happens in a camp or a truck rather than a workshop.

A 7-inch blade sits at the practical end of the Bowie range. It gives you reach into a body cavity and long skinning strokes with fewer passes, while remaining controllable enough to work around a joint without constant repositioning.

That balance of reach and control is why this size sells better to working hunters than the very large patterns do. A 12-inch Bowie chops beautifully and skins poorly. This one does both adequately.

Carbon steel is not stainless. Blood and stomach contents are acidic and will mark it if left overnight, so drying and oiling are part of ownership.

Handle & Grip

Stag horn is dense keratin with a naturally textured surface. That texture is genuinely useful during field dressing, giving your palm something to grip when your hands are slick with blood and fat.

Horn also runs warm in the hand. On a cold morning when your fingers are already stiff, a handle that does not pull heat away lets you work longer before your grip starts to fail.

At 5 inches, the handle is slightly shorter than the blade, which puts balance close to your hand. That suits a hunting knife, where control matters more than chopping force.

Natural horn responds to its environment. Prolonged soaking or extremely dry storage can cause checking over years, and oiling a few times a year prevents it entirely.

Knife Care

Wipe the blade during the work and wash it properly afterward. Blood and stomach contents are acidic and will spot carbon steel if left overnight.

Dry the knife completely and apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage. Keep it in a dry place, out of its sheath. Work a small amount of oil into the stag horn a few times a year to prevent drying and cracking. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge stops biting, and avoid powered grinders, which build enough heat to soften the temper permanently.
