9-Inch Handmade Damascus Outdoor Knife with Book-matched Olive Wood Handle
This handmade Damascus outdoor knife runs 9 inches with the blade and handle split evenly at 4.5 inches. That balance is what makes it genuinely versatile rather than specialised in one direction.
The blade is forged from 15N20 and 1080 high-carbon steels in a BoneFire pattern. Book-matched olive wood scales with a black fiber lining give the handle mirrored grain on both sides. A buffalo skin sheath is included. It suits campers, hunters, bushcraft users, and anyone who would rather carry one capable knife than three specialised ones.

Handmade Craftsmanship
The billet starts as stacked 15N20 and 1080. Our smiths bring it to welding heat, hammer the layers into a single piece, then work the steel to raise the BoneFire figure. An acid etch darkens the 1080 and leaves the nickel-rich 15N20 bright, and that contrast lives inside the steel rather than on top of it.
Book matching means splitting one piece of olive wood and opening it like a book, so the grain on one side mirrors the other. It comes from furniture and instrument making, and it only works if the cut is clean and both halves align precisely on the tang.
Olive wood is dense and naturally oily, which makes it cut differently from most hardwoods and lets it take a fine finish without heavy lacquer.
Blade Performance
1080 holds roughly 0.80 percent carbon. It hardens predictably and takes impact without chipping, so the edge dents or rolls rather than breaking out.
15N20 adds nickel and a tighter grain structure, bringing the edge to a keener point. Together they cut cleanly and sharpen back on a stone in minutes.
At 4.5 inches on 5 mm stock, the blade covers a wide range without being awkward anywhere. You can baton kindling, carve feather sticks, slice food, and dress game with the same edge. It will not chop like a longer blade or cape like a dedicated skinner, but it handles all of those jobs at a workable level, which is what a general outdoor knife should do.
Both steels are carbon steels. Easy sharpening and mandatory oiling.
Handle and Grip
Olive wood carries natural oils that give it a measure of water resistance and a warm, smooth feel that synthetics never quite reproduce.
At 4.5 inches, the handle matches the blade exactly, putting the balance point at your hand. Chopping does not feel top-heavy, and detail work does not require fighting the knife's weight. You can slide back for leverage or choke up behind the blade for control.
The 5 mm scale thickness spreads pressure across your palm rather than concentrating it at the edges, which is what prevents hot spots over a long session.
Wood needs a little attention. Wipe it dry after wet work and rub in a food-safe oil a few times a year.
Ideal Uses
- Camp chores including food prep, cordage, and kindling
- Bushcraft carving, notching, and feather sticks
- Hunting support tasks including field dressing and skinning
- Outdoor cooking at the fire or camp table
- Hiking and general outdoor carry as a fixed blade
- Gifting to campers, hunters, and knife enthusiasts
Sheath and Carry
A buffalo skin leather sheath is included. Buffalo hide runs thicker and denser than common cowhide, so it resists scuffing and holds its shape through seasons of belt carry.
The sheath covers the edge fully and rides on your belt for easy one-handed access. Store the knife outside the leather between uses, since tanned hide holds humidity and carbon steel does not tolerate that for long.

Knife Care
Wipe the blade clean after each use and dry it completely. Sap, food acids, and moisture all mark carbon steel if they are left to sit.
Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage and keep the knife dry and out of its sheath. Work food-safe oil into the olive wood every few months to keep the grain from drying. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge stops biting, and avoid powered grinders, which build heat that can soften the temper for good. A gray patina develops over time and slows further rust.
Why Choose Centuries Crafts?
We forge, grind, and finish each blade by hand, and we choose the steel and the wood before the work begins. Every knife gets checked for fit and finish before it ships. A general outdoor knife gets used more than any other blade someone owns, so it has to hold up to that.
