The billet starts as stacked 15N20 and 1080. Our smiths bring it to welding heat, hammer the layers into a single piece, then work the steel to raise the bonfire figure. An acid etch afterward darkens the 1080 and leaves the nickel-rich 15N20 bright; that contrast is the entire visual effect, and it lives inside the steel rather than on top of it.

The handle takes a different kind of care. Book-matching means we split one piece of rosewood and open it like a book, so the grain on one scale mirrors the other. It's a technique from furniture making and instrument building, and it only works if the cut is clean and the two halves are aligned precisely when they go on the tang.

After pinning, we sand through progressive grits until the transition between wood and steel disappears under your palm.

Blade Performance

1080 holds roughly 0.80% carbon. It's a dependable steel that hardens predictably and takes impact without chipping, which means the edge dents or rolls rather than breaking out; and a rolled edge is fixable in the field.

15N20 adds nickel and a tighter grain structure, bringing the edge to a keener point and refining what 1080 does alone. Together they cut cleanly and sharpen back on a stone in minutes.

At 4.5 inches on 5 mm stock, the blade covers a wide range without being awkward anywhere. You can baton kindling, carve feather sticks, slice food, and dress game with the same edge. It won't chop like a longer blade or cape like a dedicated skinner, but it handles all of those jobs at a workable level, which is what multi-purpose actually means.

Both steels are carbon steels. That means easy sharpening and mandatory oiling.

Handle & Grip

Rosewood is dense, hard-wearing, and naturally oily. Those oils give it a measure of water resistance and a smooth feel that doesn't need a heavy lacquer coat to look right.

The 4.5-inch handle matches the blade exactly, putting the balance point at your hand. Chopping doesn't feel top-heavy, and detail work doesn't require fighting the knife's weight. You can slide back for leverage or choke up behind the blade for control.

An honest note on wood: rosewood handles humidity better than most hardwoods but isn't Micarta. Wipe it down after wet work and oil it a few times a year. In exchange, the book-matched grain gives you something no synthetic material can produce, and the color deepens with handling over the years.

Sheath & Carry

A fitted buffalo leather sheath is included. Buffalo hide runs thicker and denser than common cowhide, so it resists scuffing and holds its shape through seasons of belt carry.

The sheath covers the edge fully and rides on your belt for easy one-handed access. Store the knife outside the leather between uses; tanned hide holds humidity, and carbon steel doesn't tolerate that for long.

Knife Care

Wipe the blade clean after each use and dry it completely. Sap, food acids, and moisture all mark carbon steel if they're left to sit.

Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage, and keep the knife dry and out of its sheath. Work food-safe oil into the rosewood every few months to keep it from drying out. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge stops biting, and avoid powered grinders; they build heat that can soften the temper for good. A gray patina will develop over time and slow further rust.
