The billet begins as stacked sheets of 15N20 and 1080. Our smiths forge-weld the layers at welding heat, then work the steel to raise the flowing bonfire figure. The acid etch darkens the 1080 and leaves the nickel-bearing 15N20 bright, which is what makes the pattern visible.

Ram horn demands a slower hand than any synthetic material. It carries natural ridges, density changes, and color variation through a single piece, so every scale reveals something different as it's shaped. Heat causes it to warp, which rules out fast grinding; we shape it in stages, letting it cool between passes.

Once fitted and pinned to the tang, the horn gets sanded through progressive grits and polished. The gloss comes from the material itself, not a coating, so it deepens with handling instead of wearing away.

Blade Performance

1080 holds roughly 0.80% carbon. It's a straightforward steel bladesmiths have relied on for generations because it hardens predictably and takes shock without chipping. In wet, dense country where you can't see what your edge is about to hit, that toughness has real value.

15N20 contributes nickel and a finer grain structure, refining the edge and keeping the steel bright through the etch. Together they give a blade that carves cleanly and comes back sharp on a stone in minutes.

At 4.5 inches on 5 mm stock, this blade covers the range a jungle knife needs. Enough spine to baton kindling and cut through light brush, short enough to carve notches and prepare food with control. It's not a machete and won't clear a trail, but it does more jobs adequately than any single-purpose blade.

Both steels are carbon steels, not stainless. That means easy field sharpening, and it means oiling.

Handle & Grip

Ram horn is compressed keratin, the same protein family as hooves and fingernails. It's hard, dense, and noticeably warm in the hand; a genuine advantage when you're working in cold, wet conditions where steel and plastic feel like ice.

The natural ridging gives your palm something to register against, which helps more than a smooth handle when your grip gets slick. At 4.5 inches, the handle matches the blade exactly, so balance sits right where your hand does.

An honest note: horn is natural and responds to its environment. Long soaking or bone-dry storage can cause checking over years. A little oil every few months prevents that completely. What you get in exchange is a handle with grain and color no manufactured material reproduces, and one that darkens with use into something distinctly yours.

Sheath & Carry

A fitted buffalo leather sheath is included. Buffalo hide is thicker and denser than standard cowhide, which suits humid country; thin leather softens and loses its shape faster in constant moisture.

The sheath covers the edge fully and rides on your belt for one-handed access. Take the knife out of the leather for storage. Tanned hide traps humidity, and that affects both the carbon steel blade and the horn scales over time.

Knife Care

Wipe the blade clean after every use and dry it fully. Humid air, sap, and food acids all leave marks on carbon steel if they sit.

Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage, and keep the knife in a dry place outside its sheath. Work a little oil into the ram horn every few months as well; it prevents the drying that leads to cracking. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge stops biting, and stay off powered grinders, which generate enough heat to soften the temper permanently.
