9-Inch Damascus Survival Knife with Ram Horn Handle
This Damascus survival knife measures 9 inches, with a 4.5 -inch blade on a matching 4.5 -inch handle. Same proportions as the Micarta version, different material philosophy entirely.
The blade is forged from 15N20 and 1080 high-carbon steels in a BoneFire pattern. Natural ram horn scales with a red fiber lining bring warm amber and honey tones with ridging that varies across every piece. A buffalo skin sheath is included. It suits hunters, campers, and anyone who wants survival capability without a synthetic handle.

Handmade Craftsmanship
The billet begins as stacked 15N20 and 1080. Our smiths forge-weld the layers at welding heat, then work the steel until the BoneFire figure appears. The acid etch darkens the 1080 and leaves the nickel-bearing 15N20 bright.
Ram horn demands a slower hand than any synthetic material. It carries natural ridges, density changes, and colour variation through a single piece, so every scale reveals something different as it is shaped. Heat causes it to warp, which rules out fast grinding, so we shape it in stages and let it cool between passes.
Once fitted and pinned, the horn is sanded through progressive grits and polished. The gloss comes from the material itself rather than a coating, so it deepens with handling instead of wearing away.
Blade Performance
1080 sits at roughly 0.80 percent carbon. It hardens predictably and takes shock without chipping, which matters when you cannot always see what your edge is about to meet.
15N20 contributes nickel and a finer grain, refining the edge and keeping the steel bright through the etch. Together they carve cleanly and come back sharp on a stone in minutes.
At 4.5 inches on 5 mm stock, the blade covers the range a survival knife needs. Enough spine to baton kindling, short enough to carve notches and prepare food with control.
Both steels are carbon steels rather than stainless. That means easy field sharpening, and it means oiling.
Handle and Grip
Ram horn is compressed keratin, hard, dense, and noticeably warm in the hand. That warmth is a genuine advantage in cold, wet conditions where steel and synthetic handles feel like ice.
The natural ridging gives your palm something to register against, which helps when your grip turns slick. It is subtler than a checkered synthetic grip but better than a fully polished surface.
At 4.5 inches, the handle matches the blade exactly, so balance sits right where your hand does.
An honest note against the Micarta version of this knife: horn needs a little oil a few times a year, and it can check if stored bone dry or left soaking. What you get in exchange is grain and colour no manufactured material reproduces, and a handle that ages into something distinctly yours.
Ideal Uses
- Survival and trekking kits where one blade covers several roles
- Bushcraft carving, notching, and shelter work
- Batoning kindling and processing small wood
- Camp cooking and food preparation
- Hunting support tasks including field dressing and skinning
- Gifting to outdoor adventurers and display for collectors
Sheath and Carry
A buffalo skin leather sheath is included. Buffalo hide is thicker and denser than standard cowhide and holds its shape through seasons of belt friction and weather.
The sheath covers the edge fully and rides on your belt for one-handed access. Take the knife out of the leather for storage, since tanned hide traps humidity that affects both the carbon steel blade and the horn scales.

Knife Care
Wipe the blade clean after every use and dry it fully. Humid air, sap, and food acids all leave marks on carbon steel if they sit.
Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage and keep the knife dry and outside its sheath. Work a little oil into the ram horn every few months to prevent the drying that leads to cracking. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge stops biting, and stay off powered grinders, which generate enough heat to soften the temper permanently.
Why Choose Centuries Crafts?
We forge each blade and shape each handle by hand, working with what a particular piece of horn offers. Materials are selected before the work begins, and every knife is checked for fit and finish before it ships.
