Handmade Craftsmanship

The billet starts as stacked 15N20 and 1080. Our smiths forge-weld the layers at welding heat, then work the hot steel to raise the bonfire figure. The acid etch darkens the 1080 while the nickel in the 15N20 stays bright, and that contrast is what makes the pattern show.

Multi-color Micarta is more demanding to shape than a single-tone block. The material is built from alternating layers of dyed fabric cured in resin, so every cut into the contour exposes a different band. Sand too aggressively in one spot and the color striping goes crooked. We shape the scales in stages, checking the banding as it develops.

After pinning to the tang, the scales get sanded through progressive grits and polished until the transition under your palm is seamless.

Blade Performance

1080 carries roughly 0.80% carbon. Bladesmiths have used it for generations because it hardens predictably and absorbs shock rather than chipping; the edge dents or rolls under impact instead of breaking out, and a rolled edge can be corrected in the field.
15N20 adds nickel and a finer grain, refining the edge and keeping the steel bright through etching. Together they cut cleanly and sharpen back on a stone in minutes.

The 3.5-inch blade on 5 mm stock is short and stout. That combination favors control and durability over reach. You get precision for carving, notching, and game work, with enough spine to take light batoning on small wood. This isn't a chopping blade; the length rules that out, but it does detail work better than any longer knife.

Both steels are carbon steels, not stainless. Easy sharpening, mandatory oiling.

Handle & Grip

Micarta is layered fabric saturated with resin and cured under pressure. It doesn't absorb water, swell in humidity, crack in cold, or rot. That's the reason it turns up on so many jungle and survival knives; it needs nothing from you.

The 4.5-inch handle gives you a full grip with room to shift, and it's longer than the blade for a reason. Balance sits behind the edge, so the knife feels controlled rather than tip-heavy. You can choke up right behind the ricasso for fine carving without your hand crowding the work.

The black, red, and white layering shows as bands along the contoured edges. It's a visual detail, but it also makes the knife easy to spot when you set it down in undergrowth.

Sheath & Carry

A fitted buffalo leather sheath is included. Buffalo hide is thicker and denser than standard cowhide, which matters in humid country where thin leather softens and loses shape faster.

The sheath covers the edge fully, and the knife's compact size means it rides all day comfortably without pulling at your belt. Store the blade outside the leather between uses; tanned hide holds moisture, and carbon steel doesn't forgive that.

Knife Care

Wipe the blade clean after each use and dry it completely. Humidity, sap, and food acids all mark carbon steel if left sitting.

Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage, and keep the knife dry and out of its sheath. The Micarta handle needs nothing beyond soap and water; no oiling schedule, no conditioning. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge stops biting, and avoid powered grinders, which build enough heat to soften the temper permanently. A gray patina will form over time and slow further rust.
