Our smiths stack 15N20 and 1080 into a billet, forge-weld the layers at welding heat, and work the steel until the BoneFire figure flows across it. An acid etch darkens the 1080 and leaves the nickel-bearing 15N20 bright, and that contrast is the whole visual effect.

Micarta in two tones is more demanding to shape than a single colour block. The material is built from layers of dyed fabric cured in resin, so every cut into the contour exposes a different band. Sand unevenly in one spot and the striping goes crooked along the handle.

We shape the scales in stages, checking the banding as it develops, then pin them to the tang and sand through progressive grits until the transition under your palm disappears.

Blade Performance

1080 carries roughly 0.80 percent carbon. Bladesmiths have used it for generations because it hardens predictably and absorbs shock rather than chipping. The edge dents or rolls under impact instead of breaking out, and a rolled edge can be corrected in the field.

15N20 adds nickel and a finer grain, refining the edge and keeping the steel bright through etching. Together they cut cleanly and sharpen back on a stone in minutes.

At 3.5 inches on 5 mm stock, this blade is short and stout. That combination favours control and durability over reach. You get precision for carving, camp tasks, and game work, with enough spine to handle light batoning on small wood.

It is worth being clear about what this is not. A 3.5 -inch Bowie will not chop or clear brush the way a 10 or 12-inch blade does. It carries the Bowie profile in a size you can actually wear on a belt all day.

Handle and Grip

Micarta is layered fabric saturated with resin and cured under pressure. It does not absorb water, swell in humidity, crack in cold, or rot, and it needs no oiling at all.

That last point is the practical difference between this Bowie and the horn- or wood-handled versions. Natural materials look better on a shelf and need periodic attention. Micarta needs a wipe.

At 4.5 inches, the handle is longer than the blade, which puts the balance behind the edge. The knife feels controlled rather than tip-heavy, and you can choke up right behind the ricasso for fine work without your hand crowding the blade.

The black and gray layering shows as bands along the contoured edges, with the red fiber liner running as a thin bright line at the tang.

Sheath and Carry

A buffalo skin leather sheath is included. Buffalo hide is thicker and denser than standard cowhide, so it protects the edge and holds its shape through years of belt carry.

The knife is small enough to ride all day comfortably without pulling at your belt, which is the main argument for a Bowie this size. Store the blade outside the leather between uses, since tanned hide holds moisture against carbon steel.

Knife Care

Wipe the blade clean after each use and dry it completely. Sap, food acids, and moisture all mark carbon steel if left sitting.

Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage and keep the knife dry and outside its sheath. The Micarta handle needs nothing beyond warm water and mild soap, with no oiling schedule to keep. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge stops biting, and avoid powered grinders, which build enough heat to soften the temper permanently. A gray patina forms over time and slows further rust.
