Raindrop is made differently than the flowing patterns. After forge-welding the 15N20 and 1080 layers into a billet, our smiths press or drill dimples into the surface, then flatten the billet back down. Grinding to the flat exposes each dimple as a ring of concentric circles, and how deep the original impression went determines how many circles appear.

The spacing has to be even, or the pattern looks accidental. That's the part that takes judgment; a raindrop billet either reads as deliberate or it doesn't, and there's no fixing it after the fact.

The acid etch darkens the 1080 and leaves the nickel-bearing 15N20 bright, which is what makes the rings visible. Handle work comes last: scales fitted to the tang, pinned, then sanded through progressive grits until nothing catches your palm during a long session.

Blade Performance

1080 holds roughly 0.80% carbon. It's a steel bladesmiths have relied on for generations because it hardens predictably and absorbs shock rather than chipping. When the edge meets bone during field dressing, it dents or rolls, and a rolled edge is fixable.

15N20 adds nickel and a finer grain structure, bringing the edge to a keener point. Together they hold up through an entire animal and sharpen back on a stone in minutes.

At 4 inches on 5 mm stock, the blade sits in a practical hunting range. Long enough to open a deer and work through the cavity, short enough to control around legs and joints without constant repositioning. The 5 mm spine gives you something solid to lean on without the blade wedging in a cut.

Both are carbon steels, not stainless. Easy sharpening in exchange for regular oiling.

Handle & Grip

Micarta is layered fabric saturated with resin and cured under pressure. It doesn't absorb blood, doesn't swell in rain, and won't crack in cold; and its surface gets slightly tackier when wet, which is the opposite of how polished wood behaves.

That matters more in hunting than in most uses. Field dressing means blood, fat, and often rain or snow, all at once.

The 4.5-inch handle is longer than the blade, so balance sits at your grip rather than out front. You can slide back for leverage or choke up behind the ricasso for careful work around the hide. The black and green coloring keeps the knife from standing out in cover while the red liner runs as a thin bright line along the tang.

Sheath & Carry

A fitted buffalo leather sheath is included. Buffalo hide is thicker and denser than standard cowhide, so it handles brush, weather, and belt friction across seasons.

The sheath covers the edge fully, and at 8.5 inches, the knife rides comfortably all day. Take the blade out of the leather for storage between hunts; tanned hide holds humidity, and carbon steel doesn't forgive that.

Knife Care

Blood and stomach contents are acidic and will spot carbon steel if they sit overnight. Wipe the blade during the work, then wash and dry it fully once you're back.

Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage, and keep the knife dry and outside its sheath. The Micarta handle needs nothing beyond soap and water; no oiling, no conditioning. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge stops biting, and avoid powered grinders, which build enough heat to soften the temper permanently. A gray patina forms over time and slows further rust.
