The billet starts as stacked layers of 15N20 and 1080. Our smiths bring it to welding heat, forge the layers into a single piece, then work the steel to raise the bonfire figure. An acid etch darkens the 1080 and leaves the nickel-bearing 15N20 bright, which is what makes the flowing pattern visible.

Horn takes more patience than synthetic scales. It's a natural material with its own grain and density variations, and it can't be rushed on a belt sander; heat makes it warp. We shape each scale slowly, fit it to the tang, and pin it before sanding through progressive grits.
The finish comes from polishing rather than coating. Horn takes a deep gloss on its own, and that surface deepens with handling rather than wearing off.

Blade Performance

1080 carries roughly 0.80% carbon. It's an old, well-understood steel that bladesmiths trust because it hardens predictably and absorbs impact instead of chipping. When the edge meets bone during field dressing, it dents rather than breaking out.

15N20 adds nickel and a finer grain, which brings the edge to a keener point. The combination gives you a blade that stays sharp through an animal and comes back on a stone in minutes.

At 4 inches on 5 mm stock, this blade sits in a practical range for hunting. Long enough to open a deer and work through the cavity, short enough to control around joints and legs without repositioning constantly. The 5 mm spine gives you something solid to lean on without turning the blade into a wedge that binds mid-cut.

Both steels are carbon steels. The trade is easy sharpening in exchange for regular oiling.

Handle & Grip

Bullhorn is keratin; the same protein as your fingernails; compressed into a dense, hard material. It's warm to the touch in cold weather, which matters when you're working with numb hands in November. Steel and plastic both feel colder.

The 4.5-inch handle is slightly longer than the blade, giving your hand room to shift. Balance sits close to your grip, so the knife turns where you steer it during detail work.

Honest note on horn: it's a natural material, and it responds to its environment. Prolonged soaking or extreme dryness can cause it to check or crack over years. Occasional oiling prevents that entirely. What you get in return is a handle with depth and character no resin can imitate, and one that darkens with handling into something personal.

Sheath & Carry

A fitted buffalo leather sheath is included. Buffalo hide runs thicker and denser than standard cowhide, so it handles weather, brush, and belt friction across seasons.

The sheath covers the edge fully, and the knife's compact size means it carries all day without pulling on your belt. Take the knife out of the leather for storage. Leather holds humidity, and that's bad for carbon steel and horn alike.

Knife Care

Wipe the blade during the work and wash it properly afterward. Blood and stomach contents are acidic and will spot carbon steel if left overnight.

Dry the knife completely, then apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage. Keep it in a dry place, out of the sheath. Rub a little oil into the horn every few months as well; it prevents the drying that leads to cracking. Sharpen on a whetstone as the edge dulls, and avoid powered grinders, which build enough heat to soften the temper for good.
