Our smiths stack 15N20 and 1080 into a billet, forge-weld the layers at heat, and work the steel until the BoneFire figure flows across it. An acid etch darkens the 1080 while the nickel-bearing 15N20 stays bright, and that contrast is what makes the pattern visible.

A 2.5 -inch blade is harder to grind well than a long one, not easier. There is almost no length for the bevel to settle into, so any inconsistency shows immediately, and the curve has to run true across a very short arc.

Bull horn adds its own demands. Heat causes horn to warp, which rules out fast grinding on a belt, so we shape each scale in stages and let it cool between passes. The final gloss comes from polishing the horn itself rather than applying a coating, which is why it deepens with handling instead of wearing through.

Handle and Grip

Bull horn is compressed keratin, the same protein family as fingernails. It is dense, hard-wearing, and noticeably warm in the hand when temperatures drop, which counts when you are working with stiff fingers on a cold morning.

The dark tone is the practical difference from ram horn. Black bull horn runs more uniform, with less visible ridging and streaking, so it reads as a cleaner and more traditional handle rather than a decorative one.

At 4 inches, the handle is well over half the total length, which drops the balance point squarely into your palm. The knife pivots where you steer it rather than pulling forward.

Horn is natural and responds to its environment. Prolonged soaking or very dry storage can cause checking over the years, and a little oil a few times a year prevents that entirely.

Sheath and Carry

A buffalo skin leather sheath is included. Buffalo hide is thicker and denser than standard cowhide, so it protects the edge and holds its shape through seasons of belt carry.

At 6.5 inches, the knife rides all day without registering on your belt. Store the blade outside the leather between uses, since tanned hide traps humidity that works against both the carbon steel and the horn scales.

Knife Care

Blood and fat are acidic and will spot carbon steel overnight. Wipe the blade as you work, then wash and dry it completely when you finish.

Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage and keep the knife in a dry place outside its sheath. Rub a small amount of oil into the horn a few times a year to prevent drying and cracking. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge stops gliding through the hide, and avoid powered grinders, which build heat that softens the temper permanently.
