6.5-Inch Handmade Damascus Skinning Knife with Bull Horn
This handmade Damascus skinning knife measures 6.5 inches, with a 3-inch blade on a 3.5-inch handle. It's a compact fixed-blade knife designed for controlled cutting tasks where precision and maneuverability matter.
The blade is forged from 15N20 and 1080 in a bonfire pattern, and the curved belly carries the cut. Black bull horn scales with a red fiber liner give it a traditional look and a deep natural gloss. Its compact proportions and traditional materials make it suitable for detailed cutting tasks, outdoor use, and collectors who prefer natural handle materials.

Handmade Craftsmanship
The billet starts as stacked sheets of 15N20 and 1080. Our smiths bring the stack to welding heat, hammer the layers into one piece, then work the steel until the bonfire figure emerges. The acid etch darkens the 1080 while the nickel in the 15N20 stays bright, and that contrast is what you see on the finished blade.
On a 3-inch blade, there's very little room for error in the grind. The bevel has to stay even across a short curve, and any wobble shows plainly. It's slower work than grinding a longer knife, not faster.
Bull horn adds its own demands. Heat warps it, so it can't be ground quickly on a belt. We shape each scale in stages, fit it to the tang, pin it, and sand through progressive grits. The final polish comes from the horn itself; it takes a deep gloss without any coating, and that surface improves with handling rather than wearing away.
Blade Performance
1080 carries roughly 0.80% carbon. It's a proven blade steel that hardens predictably and offers toughness during demanding cutting tasks.
15N20 contributes nickel and a finer grain structure, and that refinement is what a skinning knife actually needs. Detailed cutting tasks benefit from a keen, well-maintained edge and controlled blade movement.
The combination can be maintained with regular sharpening to help preserve a clean and efficient cutting edge.
At 3 inches, the tip stays close to your hand. The compact blade keeps the tip close to the hand, supporting controlled and precise cutting.
Handle & Grip
Bull horn is dense, compressed keratin, the same protein family as fingernails. It's hard, durable, and noticeably warm in the hand when temperatures drop. The natural material also provides a comfortable feel during outdoor use in changing conditions.
The 3.5-inch handle is longer than the blade, which puts the balance point right at your palm. The knife pivots where you steer it instead of pulling forward, and that control is the whole reason skinners are proportioned this way.
Honest note on horn: it's a natural material, and it reacts to its environment. Prolonged soaking or very dry storage can lead to checking over the years. A little oil a few times a year prevents that completely. In exchange, you get a handle with depth and character no resin imitates, and one that darkens with use.

Sheath & Carry
A fitted buffalo leather sheath is included. Buffalo hide is thicker and denser than standard cowhide, so it protects the edge and holds its shape through years of belt carry.
The compact size and fitted sheath make the knife convenient to store and transport. Store the blade outside the leather between uses; tanned hide traps humidity, and that's bad for the carbon steel and the horn alike.

Knife Care
Moisture and residue can mark carbon steel, so clean and dry the blade thoroughly after use.
Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage, and keep the knife dry and out of its sheath. Work a small amount of oil into the horn every few months to prevent drying and cracking. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge begins to lose its cutting performance., and avoid powered grinders; they build heat that softens the temper permanently.
Why Choose Centuries Crafts?
We forge each blade and shape each handle by hand. Materials get selected before the work begins, and every knife is checked for fit and finish before it ships. A compact handmade knife depends on attention to small details, which is why we focus closely on fit, finish, and material quality.
