An 11-inch blade is a long way to hold a grind even, and a mirror polish shows every deviation. Achieving that finish means working through progressively finer abrasives and buffing at the end, with each stage clearing the scratches from the one before. Skip a grit and the final buff simply makes those deeper scratches shine.

D2 makes this harder. The steel is full of hard carbides that resist abrasion, which is excellent in a cutting edge and frustrating on a polishing wheel.

The handle is assembled in sections. Buffalo horn and leather are stacked and fitted onto the tang between the brass guard at the front and the brass pommel at the rear, then shaped as one piece. That layered construction gives the profile its banded look.

Brass was chosen over steel for the fittings for good reason. It is softer, so it can be fitted tightly against the blade shoulder, and it takes on a warm patina rather than staying uniformly bright.

Blade Performance

D2 tool steel forms hard carbides from its carbon and chromium content, and those carbides are what give it long edge life. On a blade this size, used for chopping and extended cutting, that retention matters.

The roughly 12 percent chromium also gives D2 noticeably better corrosion resistance than plain carbon steel. It is not fully stainless, but it handles field conditions well with basic care.

An 11-inch blade delivers real chopping authority. The weight out front carries through a swing, so you are guiding the blade rather than forcing it. That same weight is why a knife this size handles brush clearing and camp wood better than any shorter blade.

The trade with D2 is sharpening effort. Diamond or ceramic abrasives cut it far more effectively than a soft natural stone.

Handle & Grip

Buffalo horn is dense compressed keratin, hard-wearing and warm to the touch in cold weather. Combined with leather in a stacked assembly, it gives a grip that neither conducts heat nor turns slick.

The brass guard is a genuine safety feature on a knife this large. It stops your hand from travelling forward onto the edge if a cut binds or a thrust lands harder than expected. The brass pommel balances that weight at the rear, which is why a 17-inch knife does not feel like it wants to fall out of your hand.

Natural materials do ask for care. Keep the horn and leather out of prolonged soaking, and treat both occasionally with an appropriate oil or conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.

Sheath & Carry

A handmade leather sheath is included, fitted to the blade. With 11 inches of exposed edge, the sheath does serious work rather than acting as an accessory.

Wipe grit from inside the sheath regularly, since a mirror-polished blade shows scratches that a satin finish would hide. Keep the knife out of the leather for long-term storage, as tanned hide holds humidity against steel, horn, and the leather grip alike.

Knife Care

Wipe the blade after every use and dry it fully. D2 resists corrosion better than plain carbon steel but is not stainless, so blood and sap will mark it if left overnight.

Apply a thin coat of mineral oil before storage and keep the knife dry and outside its sheath. Work a small amount of oil into the horn and a leather conditioner into the grip a few times a year to prevent drying. Sharpen with diamond or ceramic abrasives rather than soft stones, and avoid powered grinders, which build heat that softens the temper permanently.
