80CrV2 is sometimes called Swedish saw steel, and it has a long history in tools that need to survive impact. It contains chromium and vanadium alongside its carbon, and the vanadium in particular refines the grain structure during heat treatment. Finer grain means a tougher blade.

Our smiths grind a 10-inch blade with the bevel running evenly from ricasso to tip, which is harder than it sounds on a blade this long. Any inconsistency in the grind shows plainly across that much steel.

Ram horn demands patience. It carries natural ridging and density variation through a single piece, and heat causes it to warp, which rules out fast grinding. We shape it in stages, letting the material cool between passes, then pin it to the tang and sand through progressive grits.

Full tang construction means the blade is cut from one continuous piece of steel running the entire length of the handle.

Blade Performance

80CrV2 sits at roughly 0.80 percent carbon, with chromium and vanadium added. That combination gives it a reputation for toughness that few simple carbon steels match. It bends and dents under impact rather than chipping or snapping.

On a 10-inch Bowie, toughness matters more than absolute edge retention. This is a blade that chops, batons, and takes lateral force, and a brittle edge would fail at exactly the moment you need it.

The 5 mm blade stock is substantial. That thickness gives the knife the spine strength to handle prying and heavy cutting, and the weight out front carries through a chopping stroke so you guide rather than force.

Both the carbon content and the alloy mean this steel sharpens back readily on a stone. Field sharpening is practical, which is the argument for carbon steel in a working knife.

Handle & Grip

Ram horn is compressed keratin, dense and hard-wearing. It runs warm in the hand, which counts when you are working with cold fingers on a winter morning, since steel and synthetic materials both pull heat away.

The natural ridging gives your palm something to register against when your grip gets slick with blood or fat. It is subtler than a checkered synthetic grip but noticeably better than a fully polished surface.

A 5-inch handle on a 10-inch blade puts the balance forward, which is what a chopping knife wants. The blade carries itself through a swing, so your wrist does less work over a long session.

Horn is natural and responds to its environment. Prolonged soaking or bone-dry storage can cause checking over the years, and a little oil a few times a year prevents that entirely.

A genuine cowhide leather sheath is included. Cowhide forms well around a blade this size and stays supple through seasons of belt carry.

The sheath covers the full edge, which matters with 10 inches of exposed steel. Store the knife outside the leather for long periods, since tanned hide holds humidity, and that works against both the carbon steel blade and the horn scales.

Knife Care

Wipe the blade clean after every use and dry it completely. 80CrV2 is carbon steel, so blood, sap, and moisture will mark it if left to sit overnight.

Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage and keep the knife dry and outside its sheath. Work a small amount of oil into the ram horn a few times a year to prevent drying and cracking. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge stops biting, and avoid powered grinders, which generate enough heat to soften the temper. A gray patina develops over time and slows further rust.
