The billet begins as stacked 15N20 and 1080. Our smiths forge-weld the layers at welding heat, then work the steel until the BoneFire figure flows across it. An acid etch darkens the 1080 and leaves the nickel-bearing 15N20 bright.

Grinding a 7-inch blade evenly takes real patience. There is a long distance for the bevel to travel, and any wobble shows plainly across that much flat surface. It is slower work than a short blade, not faster.

Book matching means splitting one piece of olive wood and opening it like a book so the grain on one side mirrors the other. It comes from furniture and instrument making, and it only works if the cut is clean and both halves align on the tang.

Blade Performance

1080 holds roughly 0.80 percent carbon. It hardens predictably and absorbs shock rather than chipping. When the edge meets bone during field dressing, it dents or rolls instead of breaking out.

15N20 adds nickel and a finer grain structure, which brings the edge to a keener point. Together, these steels provide a durable edge that can be maintained with regular sharpening.

At 7 inches, the blade delivers genuine reach and cutting power. The longer blade provides useful reach for outdoor cutting tasks and larger material preparation. On larger games, that saves real time.

The trade-off is control at the tip. The blade length is better suited to larger outdoor cutting tasks and camp work than detailed, close-control cutting.

Handle and Grip

Olive wood is dense and naturally oily. Those oils give it real water resistance and a warm feel, which counts on a cold morning when your fingers are already stiff.

At 5 inches, the handle is shorter than the blade, so balance sits forward. The knife carries some of its own weight through a cut rather than sitting dead in your palm, and that helps on long strokes through hide and muscle.

The Book-matched grain runs continuously across both scales, with the black fiber liner as a thin dark line where wood meets steel.
Wood needs a little care. Wipe it dry after wet work and rub in food-safe oil a few times a year.

Sheath and Carry

A buffalo skin leather sheath is included. Buffalo hide is thicker and denser than standard cowhide, so it holds its shape through seasons of belt carry and brush contact.

The sheath covers the full edge, which matters on a blade this length. Store the knife outside the leather between hunts, since tanned hide holds moisture that affects both the carbon steel and the wood.

Knife Care

Wipe the blade during the work, then wash and dry it completely afterward.

Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage and keep the knife dry and out of its sheath. Rub food-safe oil into the olive wood every few months to keep the grain from drying. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge stops biting, and avoid powered grinders, which build heat that softens the temper permanently. A gray patina develops over time and slows further rust.
