A mirror polish is one of the most labour-intensive finishes on a knife. It means working the blade through progressively finer abrasives, then buffing, with each stage removing the scratches left by the one before. Skip a grit and the finer stages simply polish the deeper scratches to a shine.

On D2, that work takes even longer. The steel is hard and full of carbides, so it resists abrasion at exactly the moment you want it to give way.

The Loveless drop point profile itself demands accuracy. The whole point of the design is a smooth, unbroken curve from the spine down to the tip, with an even belly running back to the ricasso. Any flat spot or hollow in that line is visible immediately.

The handle uses resin scales separated by thin contrasting spacers, a construction detail that shows as fine lines when you look at the handle in profile.

Blade Performance

At 55 to 60 HRC, this blade sits in a good working range for hunting. Hard enough to hold an edge through an entire animal, tough enough to dent rather than shatter if the edge finds bone.

D2 earns its reputation on edge retention. The hard carbides formed by its carbon and chromium keep the edge cutting well after simpler steels have gone dull, which is exactly what you want partway through skinning a deer with cold hands.

Its roughly 12 percent chromium gives it real corrosion resistance too, close to stainless without quite reaching it. In practice that means it handles blood and wet weather far better than plain carbon steel.

The drop point profile is the reason this shape dominates hunting knives. Putting the tip in line with your cutting force gives you control for skinning, and the wide belly slices efficiently on long strokes. There is no delicate point to snap when you work around a joint.

Handle & Grip

Resin is a practical handle material for a hunting knife. It does not absorb blood or water, does not swell in humidity, and will not crack in cold weather. Wood needs oiling and attention; resin needs a wipe.

The 5.5-inch handle is longer than most on a 6.5-inch blade, which puts the balance point back toward your hand. That favours control over chopping power, and control is what skinning and field dressing actually require.

Contrasting spacers between the scales and the tang do more than decorate. They mark the layers of the handle build and give the profile a defined line rather than an abrupt transition.

The scales are shaped and sanded so nothing catches your palm during a long processing session.

Sheath & Carry

A leather sheath is included for belt carry. Leather stays quiet against gear in the field, which matters more to hunters than to most other users.

Take extra care with a mirror-polished blade in a leather sheath. Sheath grit will scratch a polished surface far more visibly than it would a satin finish, so wipe both the blade and the inside of the sheath clean before storing. Keep the knife out of the sheath for long-term storage.

Knife Care

Wipe the blade during the work and wash it properly afterward. D2 resists corrosion better than plain carbon steel but is not stainless, and blood left overnight will mark it.

Dry the knife completely and apply a thin coat of mineral oil before storage. Keep it dry and out of the sheath between hunts. Clean grit from the sheath interior regularly, since a mirror finish shows scratches that a satin blade would hide. Sharpen with diamond or ceramic abrasives, which handle D2 far better than soft stones, and avoid powered grinders entirely.
