12-Inch Damascus Steel Camping & Survival Knife
This handmade Damascus camping knife pairs a 7-inch blade with a 5 -inch handle, and that ratio is what makes it a survival knife rather than a camp knife. Seven inches of edge gives you chopping reach. Five inches of handle keeps it steerable.
The blade is forged from 15N20 and 1080 high-carbon steels in a Bonfire pattern, with flame-like figures flowing across the surface. Book-matched olive wood scales with a black fiber lining give you mirrored grain on both sides. A buffalo skin sheath is included. It suits campers, hunters, bushcraft users, and anyone building a kit where one blade has to do several jobs.

Handmade Craftsmanship
Our smiths stack 15N20 and 1080 into a billet, bring it to welding heat, and hammer the layers into a single piece. Working the hot steel raises the Bonfire figure, which flows rather than running in straight lines. An acid etch afterward darkens the 1080 and leaves the nickel-bearing 15N20 bright, and that contrast is the whole visual effect.
Grinding a 7-inch blade evenly takes patience. There is a long distance for the bevel to travel, and any wobble shows plainly across that much flat.
Book matching the handle means splitting one piece of olive wood and opening it like a book, so the grain on one side mirrors the other. It is a technique borrowed from furniture and instrument making, and it only works if the cut is clean and both halves align precisely on the tang.
Blade Performance
1080 carries roughly 0.80 percent carbon. Bladesmiths have relied on it for generations because it hardens predictably and absorbs shock rather than chipping. When your edge meets a hidden knot in a piece of firewood, it dents or rolls instead of breaking out, and a rolled edge can be straightened in the field.
15N20 adds nickel and a finer grain structure, which brings the edge to a keener point and keeps the steel bright through the etch. Together they cut cleanly and come back sharp on a stone in minutes.
That last part is the practical argument for carbon steel in survival gear. You can restore a working edge on a river rock if you have to. Premium stainless holds longer but fights you when it finally dulls.
At 7 inches, the blade has genuine chopping capability. Weight sits forward and carries through a swing, so you guide the blade rather than forcing it through kindling or light brush.
Handle and Grip
Olive wood is dense and naturally oily. Those oils give it real water resistance and a smooth, warm feel that synthetic handles never quite match, particularly on a cold morning when your fingers are already stiff.
At 5 inches, the handle gives a full grip with room to shift. Slide back for maximum leverage on a chopping stroke, or choke up toward the blade for carving and food preparation. On a 7-inch blade, you need both positions.
The 5 mm scale thickness spreads pressure across your whole palm rather than concentrating it along the edges, which is what prevents hot spots during a long session.
Wood does ask for a little care. Wipe it dry after wet work and rub in a food-safe oil a few times a year.
Ideal Uses
- Camp cooking and food preparation
- Chopping kindling and processing small wood
- Bushcraft carving, notching, and shelter work
- Hunting support tasks including field dressing
- Hiking and survival kits where one blade covers several roles
- Gifting to campers and outdoor adventurers
Sheath and Carry
A buffalo skin leather sheath is included. Buffalo hide is thicker and denser than standard cowhide, so it holds its shape through seasons of belt friction and brush contact.
The sheath covers the full edge and rides on your belt for one-handed access. Take the knife out of the leather for long-term storage. Tanned hide holds humidity, and carbon steel does not forgive that over months in a cupboard.

Knife Care
Wipe the blade clean after every use and dry it completely. Sap, food acids, and moisture all mark carbon steel if they are left to sit.
Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage, and keep the knife in a dry place outside its sheath. Rub food-safe oil into the olive wood every few months to stop the grain drying out. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge stops biting, and avoid powered grinders, which build enough heat to soften the temper permanently. A gray patina develops over time and slows further rust rather than causing harm.
Why Choose Centuries Crafts?
We forge, grind, and finish each blade by hand, and every handle is fitted individually. Materials are chosen before the work starts, and nothing ships without a check on fit and finish. A survival knife might be the only tool someone has on a difficult day, so we build it to be worth that trust.
