The ladder pattern is made deliberately rather than appearing by chance. After forge welding 1095 and 15N20 into a billet through 5 folds to reach 352 layers, our smiths cut grooves across the surface at regular intervals and then flatten the billet back down. Grinding to the flat exposes the disturbed layers as rungs running across the blade.

Even spacing is what separates a ladder pattern that reads as intentional from one that looks accidental. It is the part of the process that takes judgment rather than just effort.

The handle is built from stacked leather washers compressed onto the tang between the Damascus clip at the front and the pommel at the rear. That is the traditional Kabar style construction, and it produces a grip that softens slightly with use and moulds to a hand over years.

The steel runs as a single piece from tip through to the pommel, which is what gives this design its balance and durability.

Blade Performance

1095 sits at roughly 0.95 percent carbon, which is high. It hardens to a keen edge and holds it well. 15N20 carries nickel, resists the acid etch to stay bright, and refines the grain of the finished blade.

At 56 to 58 HRC, the blade lands where a working knife should. Hard enough to hold a working edge through a day of cutting, tough enough to dent rather than chip when the edge finds bone or a hidden knot.

The 4.5 mm blade stock is substantial. That thickness lets the knife take lateral force and batoning strikes that would concern a thinner blade, which is why this profile has survived as a field knife for so long.

A 7.5-inch clip point blade gives you a long cutting stroke for skinning and slicing, with a fine point for detail work. It is a genuinely versatile shape, which is exactly why it was adopted for general field use in the first place.

Handle & Grip

Stacked leather washers make an unusual handle by modern standards, and they work for reasons that are easy to miss. Leather does not conduct heat, so the grip stays warm in cold weather and never becomes uncomfortable in the sun.

It also compresses very slightly under your hand rather than staying rigid, which absorbs shock during chopping and reduces fatigue over a long session.

The Damascus clip at the front and pommel at the rear lock the stack in place and add weight at both ends of the handle. That distribution is why an 11-ounce knife feels balanced rather than blade heavy.

Leather grips do need care. Keep them out of prolonged soaking and treat them occasionally with a leather conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.

A cowhide leather pouch sheath is included, set up for right-hand carry with a belt loop. Cowhide is supple enough to form around the blade while remaining thick enough to protect the edge and your leg.

The pouch style covers the blade fully and keeps it secure while you move through brush. Store the knife outside the sheath for long periods, since tanned hide holds moisture against carbon steel and against the leather grip as well.

Knife Care

Wipe the blade clean after every use and dry it completely. 1095 and 15N20 are both carbon steels, so blood, sap, and moisture will mark them if left sitting.

Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage and keep the knife dry and outside its sheath. Treat the leather grip with a conditioner occasionally to stop it drying and cracking, and avoid soaking it. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge stops biting, and avoid powered grinders. A gray patina will develop over time and slow further rust rather than causing harm.
