11-Inch Hand-Forged Damascus Hunting Knife
This hand-forged Damascus hunting knife splits evenly at 5 inches of blade and 5 inches of handle. That symmetry puts the balance point right where your hand sits, which favours control over chopping power.
The blade is Damascus steel, and the guard is Damascus as well, rather than plain steel or brass. Matching the guard to the blade is a detail most makers skip because it costs extra material and extra work. Rosewood scales complete the handle, and a leather sheath is included. It suits hunters, campers, and collectors who look at construction details.

Handmade Craftsmanship
Damascus begins as a stack of two steels with different carbon and nickel content. Our smiths forge-weld that stack solid, then draw and fold it to build layers. Once ground and acid-etched, one steel darkens while the acid-etched steel brightens, and the contrast between them is what makes the pattern visible.
Making the guard from Damascus as well means forging a second, smaller piece and matching its pattern character to the blade. It is a small component, but it doubles part of the forging work, and it is why the knife reads as one piece rather than a blade with hardware attached.
Rosewood scales are shaped, fitted to the tang, and sanded through progressive grits until the transition disappears under your palm. Because rosewood is natural, no two handles carry the same grain.
Blade Performance
Damascus of this type is carbon steel rather than stainless. That gives you a blade that takes a genuinely keen edge and comes back sharp on a stone in minutes, which is what hunters actually need. You sharpen a working knife in the field, not in a workshop.
The 5-inch blade sits in a practical hunting range. Long enough to open a body cavity and take useful skinning strokes, short enough to control around legs and joints without constant repositioning.
An even 5-inch handle behind that blade places the balance in your grip rather than out front. The knife turns where you steer it, which is exactly what field dressing requires when you are working by feel around a joint.
The trade-off with carbon steel is straightforward. Easy sharpening in exchange for drying and oiling after use.
Handle & Grip
Rosewood is dense, hard-wearing, and naturally oily. Those oils give it a measure of water resistance and a grip that stays secure rather than turning slick with blood or rain.
At 5 inches, the handle gives a full grip with room to shift. You can slide back for leverage on a long cut or choke up against the guard for careful work close to the hide.
The Damascus guard gives your index finger a definite stop point and prevents your hand from sliding forward onto the edge when a cut binds. Practically, it works like any guard, but visually it continues the pattern from the blade rather than interrupting it.
Wood does need occasional care. Wipe it dry after wet work and rub in a food-safe oil a few times a year.
Ideal Uses
- Field dressing deer, hogs, and mid-size game
- Skinning and quartering
- Camp food preparation and general cutting
- Bushcraft tasks that do not require chopping
- Everyday carry as a fixed blade
- Collecting and display, and gifting to hunters
Sheath & Carry
A leather sheath comes with the knife. Leather remains the standard for hunting knives partly because it stays quiet against gear, where a hard polymer sheath clicks with every step.
The sheath covers the edge fully and carries on your belt for one-handed access. At 11 inches, the knife rides comfortably all day without pulling. Store it outside the sheath between hunts, since tanned hide holds moisture against carbon steel.

Knife Care
Blood and stomach contents are acidic and will spot carbon steel overnight. Wipe the blade during the work, then wash and dry it completely once you are finished.
Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage and keep the knife dry and out of its sheath. Rub food-safe oil into the rosewood every few months to stop the grain from drying. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge stops biting, and avoid powered grinders, which build enough heat to soften the temper permanently. A gray patina forms over time and slows further rust.
Why Choose Centuries Crafts?
We forge, grind, and finish each blade by hand, and we forge the guard the same way rather than buying it in hardware. Materials are chosen before the work starts, and every knife is checked for fit and finish before it ships. Matching the guard to the blade costs more time, and it is the kind of detail that separates a custom knife from an assembled one.
