10-Inch Handmade D2 Steel Hunting Knife
This handmade D2 steel hunting knife runs 10 inches as a fixed blade, sized for real fieldwork rather than display. D2 is a tool steel, originally developed for industrial cutting dies, and it brings serious edge retention to a hunting blade.
Rosewood scales give the handle a warm, non-slip grip that holds when your hands are wet with blood or rain. A leather sheath comes with the knife for belt carry. It suits hunters, campers, survival users, and outdoor adventurers who want a blade that stays sharp through a long day.

Handmade Craftsmanship
D2 is a demanding steel to work with. It contains around 12 percent chromium and high carbon, which makes it hard to grind and hard to heat treat correctly. The window for proper hardening is narrower than with simple carbon steels, and getting it wrong leaves a blade that either chips or never reaches full hardness.
Our smiths grind each blade after heat treatment, when the steel is at full hardness and least forgiving. That order matters. Grinding a hardened D2 blade takes longer and wears through more abrasive material, but it avoids the distortion that heat treating a finished blade can cause.
Rosewood scales are shaped, fitted to the tang, and pinned, then sanded through progressive grits until the transition under your palm disappears. Because rosewood is natural, the grain runs differently on every knife.
Blade Performance
D2 is often called a semi-stainless steel. Its 12 percent chromium is enough to give it noticeably better corrosion resistance than plain carbon steel, but below the roughly 13 percent threshold that defines true stainless. In practice, that means it resists rust well in the field while still needing basic care.
The real reason hunters choose D2 is edge retention. The high-carbon and chromium form hard carbides in the steel, and those carbides are what let the edge keep cutting long after a simpler steel would have dulled. On a long processing session, that means you finish the animal on one edge.
The trade is sharpening. Those same carbides make D2 harder to bring back on a stone. It takes more time and benefits from diamond or ceramic abrasives rather than a soft natural stone.
At 10 inches overall, the knife has enough blade for field dressing and skinning while staying controllable around joints.
Handle & Grip
Rosewood is dense, hard-wearing, and naturally oily. Those oils give it real water resistance and a grip that stays secure rather than turning slick when wet.
That non-slip quality is the practical argument for rosewood on a hunting knife. Field dressing means blood and fat on your hands, and a polished handle with no texture becomes a hazard in exactly the moment you need control.
The handle is shaped rather than left flat, so your fingers settle into the same position each time. Over a long session, that consistency prevents hot spots and keeps your grip from creeping forward.
Rosewood does need a little care. Wipe it dry after wet work and rub in a food-safe oil a few times a year to keep the grain from drying.
Ideal Uses
- Field dressing deer, hogs, and mid-size game
- Skinning and quartering
- Camp food preparation and general cutting
- Bushcraft and survival tasks
- Outdoor activities where a dependable fixed blade matters
- Gifting to hunters and outdoor enthusiasts
Sheath & Carry
The knife ships with a leather sheath sized to the blade. Leather is the traditional choice for hunting knives because it is quiet in the field, unlike hard polymer sheaths that click against gear.
The sheath covers the edge fully and rides on your belt for one-handed access. Store the knife outside the leather between hunts, since tanned hide holds humidity and even a semi-stainless steel like D2 will spot if left wet against leather for months.

Knife Care
Wipe the blade during the work and wash it properly afterward. Blood and stomach contents are acidic, and while D2 resists corrosion better than plain carbon steel, it is not stainless and will spot if neglected.
Dry the knife completely and apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage. Keep it dry and out of the sheath between uses. Sharpen with diamond or ceramic abrasives rather than a soft stone, since D2 is hard on natural stones. Avoid powered grinders, which build enough heat to soften the temper permanently.
Why Choose Centuries Crafts?
We grind, finish, and fit each knife by hand. Materials are chosen before the work starts, and every blade is checked for fit and finish before it ships. Working D2 by hand costs more time and more abrasive materials than easier steels, and the edge retention is what makes that worth doing.
