Our smiths stack 15N20 and 1080 into a billet, forge-weld the layers at welding heat, and work the steel until the BoneFire figure flows across it. An acid etch darkens the 1080 and leaves the nickel-bearing 15N20 bright, and that contrast is what makes the pattern visible.

Bull horn takes more patience than any synthetic scale. It is a natural material with its own grain and density variation, and heat makes it warp, which rules out fast grinding on a belt. We shape each scale in stages, letting it cool between passes, then fit it to the tang and pin it.

The final finish comes from polishing rather than coating. Horn takes a deep gloss on its own, and that surface improves with handling instead of wearing away the way a lacquer does.

Blade Performance

1080 carries roughly 0.80 percent carbon. It is an old, well-understood steel that hardens predictably and absorbs impact rather than chipping. When the edge meets a rib bone during field dressing, it dents instead of breaking out, and a dented edge can be brought back on a stone.

15N20 adds nickel and a finer grain structure, which brings the edge to a keener point. Together they stay sharp through an entire animal and return to sharp in minutes.

At 4.75 inches, the blade sits in a genuinely useful hunting range. Long enough to open a body cavity and take efficient skinning strokes, short enough to control around legs and joints without constant repositioning.

The 5 mm spine gives you something solid to lean on during a hard cut without turning the blade into a wedge that binds partway through.

Handle and Grip

Bull horn is keratin, the same protein as your fingernails, compressed into a dense and hard material. It runs warm to the touch, which matters more than it sounds when you are working with numb fingers on a cold morning. Steel and plastic both draw heat away from your hand.

At 4.25 inches, the handle is slightly shorter than the blade, so the balance sits just forward of your grip. The knife carries a little of its own weight through a cut rather than sitting dead in your palm.

Horn is natural and responds to its environment. Prolonged soaking or very dry storage can cause checking over the years, and a little oil a few times a year prevents that completely. In exchange, you get a handle with depth no resin imitates, one that darkens with handling into something personal.

Sheath and Carry

A buffalo skin leather sheath is included. Buffalo hide runs thicker and denser than standard cowhide, so it handles weather, brush, and belt friction across seasons.

The sheath covers the edge fully and rides on your belt for one-handed access. Take the knife out of the leather for storage between hunts, since tanned hide holds humidity, and that works against both the carbon steel blade and the horn scales.

Knife Care

Wipe the blade during the work and wash it properly afterward. Blood and stomach contents are acidic and will spot carbon steel if left overnight.

Dry the knife completely and apply a thin coat of mineral oil or blade oil before storage. Keep it in a dry place, out of its sheath. Rub a little oil into the horn a few times a year as well, since that prevents the drying that leads to cracking. Sharpen on a whetstone when the edge stops biting, and avoid powered grinders, which build enough heat to soften the temper for good.
